This poster presents an approach for the numerical modeling of open-cell ceramic foams in order to investigate the thermo-mechanical behavior during metal melt filtration processes. The described methods include the creation of the geometric models, fluid-dynamic simulations of the liquid metal flow using the lattice Boltzmann method and finite element simulations of the ceramic foam under general loads.


Artificial and real ceramic foam structures are compared with respect to their topological and geometrical structures. Parameter studies show how morphological parameters can influence the mechanical properties as well as the filtration efficiency of such structures.
