Design, manufacturing and properties of metallic sandwiches using open cellular metallic cores

In certain applications, fully metallic sandwiches with an open porous core that allows the through-flow of fluids for cooling purposes are required. The design of optimized sandwich constructions with maximized weight-specific stiffness was carried out based on an extended linear sandwich theory, taking into account also the stiffness of the cellular metallic core. Different core materials such as sponges and sintered fiber structures made from steel were taken into account. Sandwiches were manufactured and mechanically tested and the experimental results were compared to the theoretical results.
